They only got in a half, but it was more than enough time for the Golden Eagles to establish themselves as the better group Tuesday night in Sunbury.
Bailey Bodker and Maddie Aleshire each found the back of the net in the first half, and Colleen White anchored the defense with a five-save effort in goal as Big Walnut notched an official, albeit abbreviated, 2-0 win over visiting Watkins Memorial. Lightning delayed things at halftime before the game was eventually called off altogether.
BW coach Drew Pitzer said he liked what he saw from his team in the opener: a group of girls playing for one another.
“The girls have really bought into our family mentality … and they played hard,” he said. “I’m excited to see this group mature together this season.”
•Liberty, just like Big Walnut, only made it through a half, but it was a dominant one as the Patriots earned a 2-0 season-opening win Tuesday at Westerville North.
Jordan Fike and Lexy Fisher accounted for the goals while Natalie Flahive and Emma Ranalli were credited with assists. Senior goalie Miranda Kuhns finished with two saves in the Patriot goal.
Tuesday’s other scores: Thomas Worthington 3, Hayes 1; Buckeye Valley 5, Centennial 0.
Tuesday’s scores: St. Charles 3, Orange 2; Dublin Jerome 2, Olentangy 0.
