Ostrander man told 911 he shot wife

An Ostrander man told a 911 dispatcher that after shooting his wife early last Saturday following an argument, he waited for two hours before calling police.

“I shot and killed my wife two hours ago by accident,” Daniel L. Fry, 40, told a Union County dispatcher just after 8 a.m. Saturday, according to a recorded 911 call.

The victim, 43-year-old Mary Fry, suffered an undisclosed number of gunshot wounds and was dead when authorities arrived at the couple’s home at 8960 Mills Road in Scioto Township.

Fry and the victim had been having marital problems and had been arguing, he said.

“All I know is I heard gunshots, and that’s all I can remember. I’ve been pacing for the last two hours. And I just, oh my gosh, I’m just scared,” Daniel Fry said.

Fry called a friend first and then turned himself in to his neighbor, a Union County sheriff’s deputy who had just returned home from a late shift. He then called 911 before giving the phone to Eric Rose, the deputy, who told dispatchers he secured the handgun Fry allegedly used to kill his wife.

Delaware County sheriff’s deputies arrived while Rose was still on the phone. Authorities seized a number of weapons from the home. Fry had a concealed carry weapon permit for a handgun, deputies said.

Fry is facing a murder charge and is currently held in the Delaware County Jail on a $250,000 bond awaiting a Nov. 3 municipal court date. His case is being presented to a Delaware County grand jury on Wednesday. If an indictment is handed down, that court date will be rescheduled.

A search of local court records shows that Fry has no previous criminal history in the area, and there have been no recent emergency calls to his house before Saturday, deputies said.

The couple mostly kept to themselves and did not socialize much in the neighborhood, according to neighbors.

Mary Fry was a longtime employee in the communications office at Wendy’s corporate headquarters in Dublin, neighbors said. She was supposed to have met co-workers early Saturday at the Columbus airport for a flight to an out-of-state conference but didn’t show up.

A neighbor and co-worker who asked not to be identified said Mary Fry was a personable and dedicated employee, but didn’t talk much about her personal life.

“Mary was always the ‘go to’ person. She was the person you could always count on,” the co-worker said.

Neighbors that spoke to the Gazette did not know much about Daniel Fry other than that he owned multiple firearms and would sometimes shoot target practice in his backyard.

There is only one other murder on record in the Ostrander area, which occurred on Stover Road in Scioto Township in Dec. 1989, Delaware County Sheriff Walter L. Davis III said.

There have been 19 homicides in Delaware County since 1975; Saturday’s is the first since Mark Horn was killed by a former roommate Dec. 2007 in his home north of Sunbury.
