Son of Thurman restaurant in downtown Delaware will once again host the St. Baldrick’s Foundation for a head-shaving event Saturday.
The event aims to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer research. The event has a goal of raising $25,000 and nearly 60 community members are expected to shave their heads to support the cause.
The event begins at 1 p.m. and will end at 4 p.m. The head shaving is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a nationally known non-profit charity dedicated to raising money for children’s cancer research and funding research initiatives to find cures for cancer.
Eighteen children honored by the St. Baldrick’s Foundation will be attending and will reportedly be decorating the bald heads of the volunteers with glitter and washable marker.
“We are really proud of having it as our in-house charity,” said Chris DeVol, owner of Son of Thurman.”You look at kids with pediatric cancer and it hurts. They haven’t had a chance to have a life. We are really proud to be able to help.”
DeVol said this is the second year Son of Thurman has hosted the event and said he plans to host it as long as possible.
DeVol added that employees have also been raising money and said the business would be making a contribution to the foundation.
Notable volunteers who will have their heads shaved include members of the Delaware City Fire Department, Delaware County EMS and Delaware police officers.
Other activities at the event include a “selfie” station, a caricature artist, games and activities for kids, a raffle and a Chinese auction.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation reports that a child is diagnosed with cancer every three minutes worldwide. The head-shaving events allow volunteers “to be bald in solidarity” with children battling cancer.
