Dairy youth having busy summer

The Delaware County Dairy Association youth have had a busy summer.

On July 2, they competed in the Ohio 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl. The junior team — Carson Walker, Emily Coy, Rachel Sherman and Jonah Van Gundy — placed second. Sherman and Coy tied for high junior test score.

The senior team — Andrew Coy, Sarah Lehner, Kate Sherman and Stacey Walters — also placed second. Lehner received the most valuable player award. Kate Sherman will advance to the National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl in November as part of the Ohio 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl team.

On July 7, Tammy McComis, Kate Sherman, Lehner, Lauren Van Gundy, Jack Van Gundy, Jonah Van Gundy and Rachel Sherman spoke to the Buckeye Valley East SACC program about dairy farming and nutritional benefits of dairy products. The youth also donated 84 eight-ounce bars of cheddar and mozzarella cheese to the Buckeye Valley East Food Pantry.

The youth will also be competing in the Ohio State Fair dairy judging contests and the Ohio State Fair dairy “skillathon.” A few of the youth are showing their animals at the Ohio State Fair, and Kate Sherman, Ohio Guernsey queen, and Lehner, Ohio Brown Swiss princess, will be busy with their respective breed royalty duties.

The group will have a summer picnic in August and the youth will end the year by exhibiting their animals at the Delaware County Fair in September.
