Man critically injured in Ashley shooting

A $250,000 bond has been set for an Ashley man accused of shooting his ex-wife’s boyfriend Tuesday night.

Christopher Robin Sidders, 41, is accused of shooting Jeffrey Shilt, 39, also of Ashley. Shilt was reported to be in critical condition Wednesday.

Sidders appeared in Delaware Municipal Court via video conferencing Wednesday morning where Municipal Judge Marianne Hemmeter said that Sidders is charged with one count of felonious assault, a second-degree felony, with two specifications — that Sidders is a repeat violent offender and that he used a firearm to commit the crime.

Assistant Delaware County Prosecutor Cory Goe said that Sidders had been staying with his ex-wife, Teresa Rogers, and her boyfriend, Shilt, at their 9 N. Franklin St. home in Ashley. At about 11 p.m. Tuesday, Sidders pulled out a gun and shot Shilt in his left jaw, Goe said.

Sidders was trying to rekindle his relationship with Rogers, Goe said.

Goe said Shilt was in critical condition Wednesday morning and it was unclear if he would survive.

According to Goe, when Delaware County sheriff’s deputies arrived at the house, Sidders denied any involvement, but later admitted to parts of the shooting. He was then arrested and charged with felonious assault.

Goe said the gun is believed to be a 9 mm weapon and investigators are still looking for it.

Goe said Sidders has a criminal record in Delaware County that includes drug trafficking charges, domestic violence and a felony burglary conviction from 2007.

After detailing Sidders’ criminal history, Goe asked Hemmeter to set bond at $250,000 and stipulate that the full amount be required, not just the usual 10 percent.

Hemmeter went along with the recommendation and set bond for $250,000 in the full amount.

Goe said the repeat violent offender specification stems from a burglary conviction.

Hemmeter told Sidders that he could face two to eight years in prison, if he is convicted on the felonious assault charge. She added that the firearm specification would add a mandatory three years to any sentence Sidders could receive and the repeat violent offender specification would add 10 years in prison to any sentence.

Sidders said he was not a violent person and had never been convicted of burglary. Hemmeter said he can contest the specification at a later date.

Sidders was in the county jail Wednesday.
