Church golf outing helps Friends Who Share

St. John Neumann Parish recently held its third annual golf outing at Bent Tree Golf Club to benefit the Big Walnut Friends Who Share food pantry.

Organizer Rob Koch said each year the golf outing participation has increased, and each year the parish has been able to donate a larger check to the local grass roots, all-volunteer social service agency.

Parish Priest Father Dave Sizemore, St. John Neumann business manager Bob Scott and Koch were at Bent Tree last week to present a $750 check to Friends Who Share President Larry Tornes and store manager Gene Wampler.

Tornes said the check comes at a time of real need for the food bank.

“I really want to express my appreciation,” Tornes said. “A check like this coming in at this time of year, when our food pantry is always down, is proof of the good heart in this community.”

Sizemore said the parish golf outing to help the food bank was started by Koch.

“Rob came up with the idea three years ago, then he put himself in it to make it happen,” Sizemore said. “As a part of our church community, this is the type of person we look for — someone who has an idea then steps forward to make a difference.”

Father Sizemore said the weather cooperated during the golf outing; that it was a fun day and everyone participating knew it was for a good cause.

“Our parish members and other golf outing participants came together as a community, and came together for the needy families in our community,” Sizemore said. “Bent Tree was very hospitable and very welcoming for us. We’re happy to have the support we had from our parish and the Big Walnut community.”
