Summerfest will offer a wide variety of family-friendly activities in the village of Galena on Aug. 22.

The opening ceremonies at 11 a.m. will feature local youth Corey Conkel on the banjo followed by the Leap of Faith Dancers at 11:45. At noon, Conkel performs again in the KidZone and, weather permitting, the Columbus Police Department helicopter will land in Ruffner Park. Kids will be able to check it out until 2 p.m. At 12:45 p.m., the Irish Dancers will perform.

The Village History and Parks wagon tours will be offered again this year at 1, 3, 5 and 7 p.m. Mayor Tom Hopper and Village Council member Dave Simmons will alternate leading the tours around the village’s scenic parks and trails system and offering the history of buildings and sites throughout the village that date to 1809.

Sunny 95 Radio will have its treat wagon at the festival from 2 to 3 p.m. in the KidZone in Ruffner Park. Kids can enjoy free bounce houses, pony rides, balloon animals and caricatures and, for a donation, can get their faces painted. The BST&G Fire District will be at the festival with fire trucks and the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office will have mounted deputies.

At 2:30 p.m. in the KidZone, Perdue’s Taekwondo will perform. At 5 p.m., the PT Reptiles show will be featured.

The Big Walnut Nature Club will have a booth in conjunction with Wild Birds Unlimited of Westerville. Wild Birds has donated a bird feeder and seed worth $130 that will be raffled off. Preservation Parks of Delaware County will also have a booth and offer a free program during the day.

At 8 p.m., the Big Walnut Nature Club will offer a free chimney swift program at the Village Hall. Participants will be able to learn about this important species and watch the swifts come in to roost for the night, entering the chimney in a dramatic tornado, say organizers.
