Accidents tie up traffic

Traffic in Delaware was expected to return to normal today after work on Central Avenue concluded Wednesday afternoon.

Police said there were no accidents as the result of the work on Central Avenue, but traffic was snarled at various times of the day Wednesday.

City officials said East Central Avenue was closed to through traffic Wednesday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. from The Point to Lake Street so that crews could connect a water line and valve.

A detour using William Street and Lake Street was in place and Lake Street traffic signals at William Street and Central Avenue were set to flash. City officials added that Delaware police were also present to maintain traffic.

Traffic on East William Street was also backed up Wednesday morning after a car accident caused traffic to be rerouted and officers had to direct traffic by hand. One of the drivers, Ben Baldwin, 37, of Delaware, said that at about 9:30 a.m. he was driving east on William Street when a black Jeep Cherokee that had been stopped at River Street pulled out in front of him. Baldwin said he didn’t have time to stop and T-boned the Cherokee. Baldwin said no one was injured in the crash.

Police say an investigation into the accident is continuing.

Officers routed westbound U.S. 36 traffic along Lake Street. Eastbound traffic on William Street was down to one lane but officers were directing traffic by hand to prevent a traffic jam.

Tow trucks arrived to take away the vehicles and the scene was cleared by 10:45 a.m. — at which point traffic was returned to normal.

Earlier Wednesday, a semi-truck was wedged under a railroad overpass on State Route 521 at about 6 a.m. but no one was injured, according to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office.

Delaware police added that another semi-truck rear-ended a vehicle in front of it after failing to merge onto U.S. 36/State Route 37 when the traffic reduces from two lanes to one lane shortly after the intersection of U.S. 36/SR 37 and SR 521. No one was injured in that accident.
