Burglary, assault trial delayed until June

A Wednesday trial for a Columbus man charged with burglary and assault was rescheduled for June in Delaware County Common Pleas Court.

Brandon Black, 29, was originally set for a jury trial Wednesday to face one charge of aggravated burglary with a firearm specification, which is a first-degree felony; a charge of assault, a first-degree misdemeanor; and aggravated menacing, also a first-degree misdemeanor. However, court documents indicate that Judge David Gormley issued a judgment Monday, postponing the trial to June 20.

At Black’s arraignment, assistant county prosecutor Jahan Karamali told Magistrate Anna Franceschelli that Black broke into the Delaware County home of his wife, Ashley, on Feb. 1. Black and his wife are divorcing.

She was home with her daughter and with a friend, Zachary Hoffer.

Court documents allege that Black threatened and assaulted Hoffer during the encounter.

Black was indicted on Feb. 10 by a Delaware County grand jury.

Black was out on bond Wednesday.

He was also ordered not to have contact with either his wife or Hoffer. However, Gormley later issued an order, allowing him to have contact with Ashley and removing his house arrest restriction.

Franceschelli informed Black at his arraignment that, due to the serious nature of the charges, he could face between three to 11 years in prison for the burglary charge and up to six months in prison for the two misdemeanor charges.

Black’s attorney, Sam Shamansky, could not attend the arraignment but sent his partner, Donald Regensburger. Regensburger said Black has no criminal record and has been monitored via GPS since his municipal court appearance with no issues.
