Screenings May 15 at All Life Center

“Why didn’t he get a physical?” is a question that Melinda Cooksey Bekos, co-founder and director of the Delaware All Life Center, has asked herself repeatedly since October.

That’s when her husband, Chris Bekos, suffered an aortic dissection. His physician gave him a 50/50 chance of surviving.

Thankfully, Bekos did survive the ordeal. “The reality is that if anybody had just listened to his chest, he would have heard that something was really, really wrong,” said Cooksey Bekos. With this thought in mind, Cooksey Bekos has arranged to offer free physicals and overall health screenings twice a year.

The All Life Community’s first “Integrative Health Screening” will be held at the All Life Center at 123 Hyatts Road on Sunday, May 15, from noon to 5 p.m. Many free services will be offered at the screening, including physicals, hearing screenings, and depression and anxiety screenings. A number of free classes will also be offered, including tai chi, yoga and integrative health.

The variety of services to be offered are representative of the All Life Community’s commitment to integrative health care. According to Cooksey Bekos, integrative health care involves reaching a balance between the six health domains: beliefs, biology, mechanics, knowledge, mind/body, and energy. “What we do here, then, is try to take in the whole picture,” she explained. This integrative approach to health care allows individuals to maximize their health by taking advantage of many approaches to maintaining healthy minds and bodies, she said.

Individuals who are interested in attending the health screening are encouraged to register for the services that they wish to receive by calling 740-201-8242. Individuals who would be willing to assist with the screenings in any way are also encouraged to call that number for more information.

“We would love to get more volunteers,” said Cooksey Bekos. “We really want it to be a community event.”

In addition to the health screenings and classes, “there’ll be a ton of common space that people can just enjoy,” according to Cooksey Bekos. This fact alone might be enough to encourage members of the community to attend the event as the center is housed in a beautiful stone building that overlooks 24 acres of pristine lawns and wooded areas.

More information about the All Life Center can be found at alllifecommunity.org. The second Integrative Health Screening will be on Oct. 20.
