Nick Spangenberg, a member of Boy Scout Troop 701 of Sunbury United Methodist Church, recently completed an Eagle Scout project at Community Library in Sunbury that local residents will enjoy for many years.
Spangenberg designed and — with the assistance of 53 volunteers in one Saturday afternoon — installed 16 raised beds filled with leaf humus compost at the library’s community garden.
Of course, it was more than a one-day project. Spangenberg said he spent 60 hours planning the project, and he had a lot of help from project sponsors. The library, after approving the project, along with Community Library Friends helped with funding. Compost came from Price Farms Organics, mulch surrounding the raised beds came from Mulch 1st, the wood was from Yoder Lumber, connecting bolts from Washington Do-It Best Hardware, and Sunbury Subway helped feed the crew during the day-long installation phase.
“I would really like to thank Sunbury Village Administrator Alan Rothermel and Sunbury maintenance supervisor Brad Gerwig,” Spangenberg said. “They had mulch that was dumped in the library parking lot moved to behind the library where the garden is located. I would also like to thank Washington Hardware. They were really nice about helping with the project.”
Spangenberg said that when the project was completed, it used 28 cubic yards of compost and 15 yards of mulch, and had accumulated a total of 272 hours of labor.
“The project’s total estimated cost was $2,700 but, thanks to sponsors and free deliveries, the final cost was lowered to $2,000,” Spangenberg said.
Spangenberg, a Big Walnut High School freshman, is a member of the high school track team and plays trumpet in the high school band. Outside of school, in addition to scouting, Spangenberg is active in the church youth group and plays guitar in the church “Praise Band.”
