OWU announces September schedule of events

Ohio Wesleyan University has announced its August and September 2015 lineup of public events.

Unless otherwise noted, admission is free.

• Now through Oct. 4 – “Storied Grounds,” an exhibition of photography by Lesley Louden, OWU Class of 1999, in the Alumni Gallery inside Mowry Alumni Center, 16 Rowland Ave. Louden also is a 1995 graduate of Delaware Hayes High School.

• 9 p.m. Aug. 21 and 28 – Evening programs at Ohio Wesleyan’s Perkins Observatory, 3199 Columbus Pike. Advance tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for children (17 and under) and senior citizens. Reserve tickets by calling 740-363-1257.

• Now through Oct. 6 – “Forgotten Places,” an exhibition of photography by OWU graduate William JanTausch, Class of 1969, in Gallery 2001 inside Beeghly Library, 43 Rowland Ave. An artist’s reception with JanTausch will be from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 17 inside the gallery.

• Aug. 20 through Sept. 23 – “Howard Little: Coming Home,” an exhibition of paintings by Little, and “Eric Nation: On and Off the Wall,” an exhibition of furniture by Nation, in Richard M. Ross Art Museum, 60 S. Sandusky St. Little (1883-1965) was an early California realist landscape painter who captured the essence of the new American frontier. Nation, who studies Little’s artwork, has been creating studio furniture and design/build projects since 1988. Nation, a former National Endowment of the Arts Fellowship recipient, will give an illustrated artist’s talk at 7 p.m. Sept. 3 in Room 312 of the R.W. Corns Building, 78 S. Sandusky St., followed by a reception from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Ross Art Museum.

• 7 p.m. Aug. 26 – Bryan Mercurio, professor of law at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in Shatin, Hong Kong, discusses “The American Pivot to Asia on Trade: The Effect of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) on Asia,” in Benes Room C of Ohio Wesleyan’s Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave. Mercurio, a 1997 Ohio Wesleyan graduate, is the author/editor of 12 books and a leading expert in the intersection between trade law and intellectual property rights.

• 7 p.m. Sept. 1 – OWU men’s soccer vs. Earlham, at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex, 249 Park Ave. Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for students, and free for anyone under age 5 or with an OWU ID.

• 7 p.m. Sept. 1 – OWU field hockey vs. Kenyon, at Selby Stadium, 45 S. Henry St.

• Sept. 4 and 5 – OWU men’s soccer hosts the Fred Myers Invitational, at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex/Roy Rike Field. Tickets for the Sept. 4 matches are $8 for adults, $4 for students, and free for anyone under age 5 or with an OWU ID. Admission is free Sept. 5 as part of a Bishop Backers Community Day celebration. OWU will play Kalamazoo at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 4 and Albion at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 5.

• 8 p.m. Sept. 4, 11, 18, and 25 – Evening programs at Ohio Wesleyan’s Perkins Observatory. Advance tickets are $8 for adults, and $6 for children (17 and under) and senior citizens. Reserve tickets by calling 740-363-1257.

• 11:15 a.m. Sept. 5 – OWU men’s and women’s cross country host the daylong OWU Invitational, at Liberty Park, 2507 Home Road, Powell.

• 1 p.m. Sept. 5 – OWU field hockey vs. Houghton, at Selby Stadium, 45 S. Henry St., Delaware. Admission is free. The game is scheduled to be streamed live at http://stream.owu.edu. Learn more at http://www.battlingbishops.com.

7 p.m. Sept. 5 – OWU football vs. Mary Hardin-Baylor, at Selby Stadium.

• 2 p.m. Sept. 6 – OWU women’s soccer vs. Centre, at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex. Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for students, and free for anyone under age 5 or with an OWU ID.

• 7 p.m. Sept. 9 – OWU field hockey vs. Earlham, at Selby Stadium.

• 7 p.m. Sept. 9 – OWU volleyball vs. Muskingum, at Branch Rickey Arena, 105 S. Sandusky St.

• 7 p.m. Sept. 9 – OWU women’s soccer vs. Case Western Reserve, at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex. Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for students, and free for anyone under age 5 or with an OWU ID.

• 7 p.m. Sept. 10 – Immaculée Ilibagiza, a survivor of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, discusses her book, “Left to Tell.” She will speak in Gray Chapel inside University Hall, 61 S. Sandusky St. At 9:30 a.m. Sept. 11, Ilibagiza will speak at St. Mary Catholic Church, 82 E. William St. Both events are free, with freewill offerings accepted.

• 8 a.m. Sept. 11 – “W” Association’s 13th Annual Golf Outing, at NorthStar Golf Club, 1150 Wilson Road, Sunbury. The four-person scramble supports OWU athletics and includes 18 holes of golf (including cart), use of the driving range, awards, live and silent auction, cookout, and cocktail reception following the outing. Cost is $150 per golfer or $600 per foursome. Registration is requested by Sept. 2. Learn more at https://community2.owu.edu/2015golf.

• 2 p.m. Sept. 12 – OWU women’s soccer vs. Baldwin Wallace, at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex. Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for students, and free for anyone under age 5 or with an OWU.

• 8 p.m. Sept. 13 – Ohio Wesleyan faculty recital including Mary Fetherston on cello, in Jemison Auditorium inside Sanborn Hall, 23 Elizabeth St.

• 7 p.m. Sept. 15 – OWU women’s soccer vs. Otterbein, at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex. Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for students, and free for anyone under age 5 or with an OWU ID.

• 4 p.m. Sept. 17 – Ohio Wesleyan’s Amy Butcher, assistant professor of English, reads from and signs copies of her new book, “Visiting Hours: A Memoir of Friendship and Murder,” in the Bayley Room on the second floor of Beeghly Library.

• Sept. 18 and 19 – OWU volleyball hosts the Bishop Invitational at Branch Rickey Arena.

• 4 p.m. Sept. 19 – Earthdance Ohio, part of the global Earthdance peace party, promoting peace, justice and sustainability, in the Benes Rooms inside Hamilton-Williams Campus Center. The local event will feature Bellydance Columbus, Israeli Folk Dances, Francine Butler and OWU dancers. A suggested donation of $5 per person will be shared with Green Columbus, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes sustainable living in central Ohio. Learn more at www.earthdanceohio.org.

• Noon Sept. 21 – Patricia Belt Conrades Summer Science Research Symposium, featuring poster presentations from students who participated in the 10-week OWU research program, at Schimmel/Conrades Science Center, 90 S. Henry St.

• 8 p.m. Sept. 22 – Ohio Wesleyan faculty recital featuring soprano Jennifer Whitehead with Mariko Kaneda on piano, in Jemison Auditorium.

• Sept. 23 through Dec. 17 – “Cultures of the World,” an exhibition of photography by OWU graduate and former alumni relations director Sally Christiansen Harris, Class of 1976, in the Alumni Gallery in Mowry Alumni Center, 16 Rowland Ave. An artist’s reception with Harris will be from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 3 inside the gallery. Harris also will give an illustrated artist talk at 7 p.m. Oct. 30 in Room 312 of the R.W. Corns Building, 78 S. Sandusky St., followed by a reception at 8 p.m. in nearby Mowry Alumni Center.

• 4:10 p.m. Sept. 24 – Ana Arjona, assistant professor of political science at Northwestern University, discusses “Opposition to the War on Drugs: A Widespread Movement?” in Benes Rooms A and B of Ohio Wesleyan’s Hamilton-Williams Campus Center.

• 7 p.m. Sept. 26 – OWU football vs. Oberlin, at Selby Stadium. Tickets are $8 for adults, $4 for students, and free for anyone under age 5 or with an OWU ID.

• 8 p.m. Sept. 26 – “New Student Scenes” featuring promising newcomers in scenes staged by this year’s directing class, on the main stage inside Chappelear Drama Center.
