Kilbourne Festival set for Aug. 20

The village of Kilbourne will host its 20th annual Kilbourne Festival on a new date — Saturday, Aug. 20 — to benefit its Good Samaritan Fund and to embrace its rural way of life, organizers say.

The Good Samaritan Fund supports needs in a four-township area — Brown, Oxford, Peru and Kingston townships. An independent committee of local citizens administers this fund. In recent years the fund has provided assistance with utilities, medicine, gasoline cards and People In Need.

As in years past, the festivities will run from 8 to 10 a.m. with a breakfast selection of pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon, biscuits, juice and coffee, and end the day with games and raffle drawings. PIN will also be accepting food items at a collection site at the church after the parade.

A parade will line up at 10:30 at the site of the old Brown School/hay field in back of this site (depending on construction) and begin the parade route at 11 a.m. with John and Shirley Humes of Bowtown Road as our grand marshals.

After the parade, sign-ups for a horseshoe tournament will begin at noon with the tournament commencing at 1 p.m. Contact C Dee’s Lil’ Store at 740-524-3191 for details on the tournament.

A cornhole tournament at the baseball fields will benefit the Kilbourne Baseball Association. Sign-ups start at 12:30 p.m. with the tournament starting at 1 o’clock. Contact Trent Pettit at 740-816-0879 for details.

The parade will also be followed by a lunch of fresh roasted pork sandwiches along with other food items, including chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, walking tacos, beverages and several side dishes and desserts.

Beginning at noon, there will be family-friendly games, pony rides, a petting zoo and events to fill the afternoon until 4 p.m. There will also be many vendors offering items ranging from homemade jams and jellies, jewelry, maple syrup products, handcrafted pens, honey, salsa, pottery, hand-blown glass, fresh produce and plants, Mennonite baked goods and homemade noodles.

There will be a silent auction, a vendor raffle and several educational displays. In the storytelling corner, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., there will be an emphasis on Delaware County history.

The festival is supported by the Kilbourne United Methodist Church and many community merchants and residents. The festivities are held in the Brown Township Park and in the area surrounding the Kilbourne United Methodist Church at 5591 State Route 521.

There is no admission fee and parking is free. If you are interested in volunteering or supporting this event, contact Trent Pettit at [email protected] or 740-816-0879. The parade participation contact is at 740-524-6041.
