‘Break Ice’ event raises diabetes awareness

The Delaware County Diabetes Association held its “Break the Ice” event June 22 at the Foot & Ankle Wellness Center.

The event featured shaved ice, popcorn, beverages and giveaways.

The association honored Dr. David Smith, who founded the organization in 1984, and Dr. Gerald Kremer, who led the group for a time. Both doctors, as well as current association board president Dr. Jane Graebner, spoke to attendees about the dangers of diabetes and the importance of awareness and testing.

The event also raised money for the association by allowing attendees to place money in the jar of whichever center podiatrist they most wanted to see receive a pie in the face. Dr. Drew Belpedio was the “winner” of that contest.

The association, which promotes diabetes education and awareness to Delaware County residents, also will receive all proceeds from the third annual Sweet Feat 5K walk. The Foot & Ankle Wellness Center organizes the walk each year, and this time it also will feature a 1-kilometer (.62 miles) course that is wheelchair-accessible.

This year’s event takes place Saturday, Sept. 24, at Willow Brook at Delaware Run. More information, including registration, can be found at SweetFeat.org.

The Foot & Ankle Wellness Center is located at 1871 W. William St.
