Arts fest seeks volunteers

Organizers of the Delaware Arts Festival are in need of volunteers for its committee roles starting next month.

An organizational meeting will take place at Delaware main library, 84 E. Winter St., at 7 p.m. Sept. 1 to determine which roles need to be filled before the 44th annual event takes place in May, said Linda Shearer, a festival volunteer.

A majority of the committee volunteers are in their 60s or older, she said, with some expected to leave their positions next year.

“We need more committee members,” she said.

The nonprofit organization has about a dozen volunteers and look to add an additional six volunteers. From September to June, committee volunteers would spend about three hours a month towards preparing the festival, including vendor placement and advertising. That’s in addition to volunteering about 32 hours total for the two-day festival.

The festival is completely volunteer-driven, Shearer said, and does not have paid staff unlike the arts festival in Columbus. It continues to provide scholarships to about four to five students each year and provide supply stipends to art instructors in the community.
