The Delaware Board of Education approved a plan Monday night that will allow an alumni group to rename the Hayes High football stadium to honor a former teacher and football coach.

The approved plan will start the process of renaming Gauthier Stadium to Cornell Stadium. The alumni group will be paying for the change in signage and a plaque memorializing George Gauthier, who the stadium is currently named for.

School officials said Gauthier was a school board member and an athletic director and football coach at Ohio Wesleyan University from 1921 to 1955.

School officials said they were approached with the potential change as renovations were being made to the stadium. The alumni group approached the board and asked it to consider naming the stadium for former Delaware City Schools teacher and coach Gerald Cornell.

School officials said Tuesday the signage may be changed as soon as the first football game on Sept. 2.

The board also approved the resignations of Amanda Hegemier and Angela Stone, school aged child care (SACC) staff at the district, as well as the resignation of Nicole Thomas, an administrative assistant at Hayes High School.

The board approved the retirement of Steven Vaughn, who has been a bus driver for the district for 14 years.

The board approved a number of new hires, including Susan Nimon and Melissa Angelo, who were hired as teachers at Smith Elementary School.

The board also approved supplemental contracts for the 2016-17 school year. These 45 supplemental contracts included department heads, house deans, club advisers and coaches.

The board approved a May 8-12 Washington, D.C., trip for students.
