‘Powell is a very popular area’

The Building Industry Association of Central Ohio is taking advantage of the September weather and the City of Powell to host this year’s Parade of Homes.

Jim Hilz, BIA executive director, attributes the larger number of homes built this year to the improved economy and the parade’s location.“This year we have more builders and homes since 2005,” he said.

Hilz said the average price of the homes are between $800,000 and $1.3 million. “Powell is a very popular area,” he said. “The builders’ perspective is to fill the price point because there seems to be a market.”

Hilz said the Verona development features 16 homes from 16 builders on a 113.5 acre site that can be seen from Powell Road. “It’s a very visible sight,” he said. “That’s what attracted the builders.”

Of the 16 houses built, Bob Webb Homes’ 5,500 square-foot home was named the 2016 Parade Foundation Home. Proceeds from the sale of the foundation home benefits the BIA Foundation and Habitat for Humanity-MidOhio.

“This is the main way we fund our foundation,” Hilz said. “It’s a good cause.”

This is the second year that the BIA Parade takes place in September and in Delaware County.

Contractors will put the latest materials and finishing into a house for the Parade of Homes. said Amy Weirick, president of

Weirick Communications. “The buyer gets some really great extras they don’t pay for,” said Amy Weirick, president of Weirick Communications.

Hilz said it had a successful turnout last year because the month’s weather is more stable than during June. “We’ll get a better indicator this year,” he said.

He said the architectural diversity is what attracts people to the event each year. This is his 13th year overseeing the parade.

Hilz said the development is an infill because of all the existing development around it in the area already.

Once the development is built, it will have a total of 166 homes that includes 112 single-family and 54 patio homes. The areas around the homes will have lots of open green space with trails and ponds. “It’s really beautiful,” Hilz said.

BIA will host a preview party for the homes scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 1 from 6-10 p.m.
