A Columbus teenager was sentenced to three years in prison Monday after pleading guilty in August to assaulting an Orange Township teen during a fight in April.

Terrance Jewell, 20, appeared in Delaware County Common Pleas Court Monday morning to be sentenced for a charge of felonious assault, a second-degree felony. Jewell pleaded guilty to the charge on Aug. 23 and admitted to punching 19-year-old Maura Burlew during a fight in the area of Blue Holly Drive in Orange Township on April 13.

Jewell entered the plea as part of an agreement with prosecutors.

As part of the agreement with prosecutors a charge of robbery, a second-degree felony and a charge of theft, a first-degree misdemeanor were dismissed. A condition of the agreement was that prosecutors and defense attorneys would jointly recommend a three-year prison sentence.

Prosecutors said Jewell, along with two other Columbus teens — Isaiah Steele, 19, and Kayle Cantrell, 20 — got into a fight with a another group of teenagers after an argument over text messaging.

Prosecutors said during the incident that Steele used a handgun to shoot 19-year-old Pierce Yurkowski-Gray of several times. Yurkowski-Gray has since been released from the hospital.

At Monday’s hearing, Delaware County Common Pleas Court Judge Everett Krueger sentenced Jewell to three years in prison and three years of mandatory post-release-control after he completes his prison sentence.

Jewell was credited the 159 days he’s spent in the Delaware County Jail since his arrest on April 13.

Jewell was in the Delaware County Jail Monday awaiting transport to prison.

Cantrell appeared in Delaware Municipal Court on Sept. 9 where she pleaded guilty to assault and theft and was given 45 days in jail by Delaware Municipal Judge Marianne Hemmeter. Cantrell was taken into custody after the sentencing and credited the 28 days she had already spent in jail.

Steele was scheduled to stand trial Tuesday but the trial was continued Monday after a joint motion to continue the trial was filed. Steele is still charged with felonious assault, a second-degree felony, which carries a firearm specification that could add additional prison time if Steele is convicted; improperly discharging a firearm at or into a habitation/in a school safety zone, a second-degree felony; receiving stolen property, a fourth-degree felony; and tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony.

A status conference for Steele has not been scheduled.

The three teens were indicted by a grand jury on April 22 and were all originally scheduled to stand trial on June 21, but the trial was delayed. The cases were later severed and three trials were scheduled.
