Exiting the European Union, better known as “Brexit,” will take a complicated recipe, says global economics expert Dan O’Brien.

“If negotiating trade agreements is difficult, unpicking the ties Britain has developed with the EU over more than four decades will be like unscrambling a million eggs and then trying to rescramble them in a different way,” said O’Brien, chief economist for the Institute of International and European Affairs, “

O’Brien, also a columnist for Ireland’s Independent Newspaper Group, will share thoughts on “Brexit and Its Global Challenges” when he speaks at 7 p.m. Sept. 26 at Ohio Wesleyan University. He will present in the Benes Rooms inside OWU’s Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware.

British citizens voted to exit the European Union (EU) in a June 23, 2016, referendum. Following the vote, the British pound fell to its lowest level in decades.

In addition to his role with the Institute of International and European Affairs, one of Ireland’s leading think tanks, O’Brien also is an adjunct senior research fellow at the School of Politics and International Relations, University College Dublin.

To date, he has spent most of his career as a senior economist and editor at the Economist Intelligence Unit, an arm of The Economist Newspaper Group. Working from London and Geneva, he covered the economics and politics of Europe and global trade and investment issues. He also has worked for the European Commission, the United Nations, the Irish Times, and Forfas.

O’Brien comments frequently in the international media, including the BBC, CNN, International Herald Tribune, and Financial Times. His latest book is “Ireland, Europe and the World: Writings on a New Century.”

His presentation is sponsored by Ohio Wesleyan’s International Studies Program. Learn more about O’Brien at http://www.iiea.com/staff/dan-obrien and more about the International Studies Program at www.owu.edu/internationalstudies.
