Man charged with 5th OVI offense

Ohio Highway Patrol troopers charged a Lewis Center man with his fifth offense of operating a vehicle while under the influence. Mark H. Holbrook, of Lewis Center, has four prior convictions for operating a vehicle while under the influence.

He was charged with his fifth offense after striking a vehicle head on at US 23 and Meadow Park at 11:07 a.m. Monday, causing serious injuries to a mother and her child. Both victims were taken by medical personnel to area hospitals in critical condition. Holbrook was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries, after being located at his residence.

The crash remains under investigation,. Holbrook will be scheduled to appear in Delaware Municipal Court at a later date.

SR 315 to close today

State Route 315 will close south of State Route 750 at 6 a.m. Tuesday. ODOT originally closed SR 315 Monday morning as planned, but then reopened the road just after noon to accommodate detoured traffic from the tanker fire at I-270 and US 33.

The tree clearing and utility work will start first thing Tuesday and last three weeks. The closure of SR 315 north of SR 750 for slope stabilization is still planned to begin Monday, Jan. 30.

Historian to talk elections at OWU

Historian Richard Steigmann-Gall will discuss “From Populism to Fascism? What History and Europe Tell about the 2016 American Election” when he speaks at 7 p.m. Jan. 31 at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Steigmann-Gall, Ph.D., associate professor of history at Kent State University and author of “The Holy Reich: Nazi Conceptions of Christianity, 1919-1945,” will speak in Benes Rooms A and B of OWU’s Hamilton-Williams Campus Center, 40 Rowland Ave., Delaware.

Steigmann-Gall’s academic interests concern the cultural and religious dimensions of German National Socialism, specifically the cohort of Nazis who believed in “positive Christianity” and the struggles they waged with Nazism’s neo-pagans for religious dominance in the Third Reich. He earned his doctorate from the University of Toronto.
