The Underground Railroad was an important series of routes that fugitive slaves escaping the Southern U.S. took to gain freedom in the Northern U.S. The Delaware County Historical Society will offer an hour-long public presentation,“The Underground Railroad in Delaware County,” at The Barn at Stratford, 2690 Stratford Road.

It starts at 7 p.m. on Feb. 2.

The program is free for all to attend, and appropriate for February Black History Month. It presents excerpts from a three-hour educational program created for use in Delaware County schools.

The program will explain how the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 impacted the Delaware community, as well as the roles of the Scioto and Olentangy Rivers in guiding runaway slaves across the county.

The highlight of the evening will be visits with two abolitionist citizens of Delaware County, William Cratty (portrayed by Joe Dwenger) and Mrs. Patience Meeker (portrayed by Nancy Fleming).
