Fire displaces Delaware man

A fire displaced a Delaware man Tuesday morning and two fire fighters suffered minor injuries.

City of Delaware Fire Chief John Donahue said fire officials received a call at 6:11 a.m. to report a fire at a single story home at 3 Colfert Court.

Donahue said fire fighters had dealt with the fire in between 15 and 20 minutes upon their arrival, but because the house was filled with “a large accumulation of materials,” it was difficult to fully extinguish the fire.

The cause of the fire had not been determined Tuesday afternoon, but it originated in the rear of the house, Donahue said.

The Delaware County Auditor reports the home is owned by Michael Coutts and is worth $76,000.

Donahue said the homeowner was not home at the time of the fire.

Fire officials said they had not determined a dollar amount for the damage done to the house Tuesday.

Donahue added that two fire fighters suffered minor injuries during the operation. Donahue said one slipped and fell and the other was hit in the face by a fire hose coupling when he was pulling it off the truck.

Both men were treated at the scene and were not admitted to the hospital.

The Red Cross was reportedly contacted to aid the displaced homeowner.

“Since it’s the holiday season, I just want to remind everyone to make sure they have working smoke detectors and not to overload power circuits,” Donahue said Tuesday.
