Classic car show set for August

Downtown Delaware’s annual Blast from the Past car show is taking shape after a change-up of organizers was announced last year.

The event will be re-branded as the 24th Annual Performance Classic Car Show, named after Performance Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram Delaware dealership on Stratford Road, and will take place on Aug. 26 with the cruise-in to occur the day before.

“The process has gone very well,” said Denny Friermood, the dealership’s general manager.

“The amount of support we received has been great,” he added.

The Vintage Auto Club of Delaware had originally organized the show for the first 23 years, raising more than $260,000 for Ohio Health Hospice of Delaware giving 300 patients the care they need. The club decided to discontinue the show because its aging membership were unable to accommodate its growth.

The organization is not involved with this year’s event, club member Jim Clements said. The former chairman of previous car shows said he provided some information to Performance. Clements said he noticed this year’s show is in August instead of July, when the event traditionally took place.

“We’re happy that there’s a car show that’s continuing in downtown,” he said.

Friermood believes he can increase participation at the event by having it in August as Marysville and Dublin will have their own shows during or after July.

The dealership is in search of sponsors, he added. OhioHealth was guaranteed to receive the same amount of money raised last year. The remainder of the proceeds will be split with the Arthritis Foundation.

Performance Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram Delaware has organized car shows in Marysville and Dublin and some of their employees have done shows in other parts of Ohio.

Registration is from 7-11 a.m. the day of the show, with judging from noon to 2 p.m., and awards presentation to follow. All classic, performance and collector cars, trucks and motorcycles are eligible to participate.
