On Sunday, May 7 at 2 p.m. the Friends of the Delaware County District Library, in partnership with the Robert F. Beard Foundation, will host children’s author and illustrator Troy Cummings at the Delaware County District Library Orange Branch, 7171 Gooding Blvd., Delaware.

Cummings is best known for his “Notebook of Doom” series, an early-reader chapter book series about a kid who moves to a town full of monsters. This twelve book series contains titles such as “Flurry of the Snombies,” “Whack of the P-Rex” and “Rise of the Balloon Goons.”

“Michael Beard and his children are frequent visitors to the Orange Branch Library, and Michael’s son loves the author Troy Cummings. So it was an easy decision to say ‘yes’ when the family foundation, The Robert F. Beard Foundation, offered to give the Friends a grant to bring Troy to Delaware County,” said Friends president Karen Cowan.

“We are looking forward to a fun-filled, interactive day with Troy thanks to the foundation and a child passionate about reading.”

During the program, titled “Making Monsters with Author Troy Cummings,” Cummings delivers a fully-illustrated presentation about creating characters and writing stories. He starts by stepping through his process for creating scenes from “The Notebook of Doom.” Then he plays a few drawing games in which he runs into storytelling “problems” and asks participants to help solve them.

Improv games, monster drawing, illustrations on-the-fly, and an epic monster battle might also be in store for all the lucky participants.

This program is free to the public. In addition, thanks to the Friends of the Library and Robert F. Beard Foundation, all children in attendance of the visit will receive one free book by Cummings. Other books will be available to purchase through Fundamentals Parent-Teacher Store.

Troy Cummings lives in Greencastle, Indiana with his family and cat and also uses his illustration skills for clients such as Cartoon Network, Highlights, Random House, Scholastic and Time for Kids.
