Memorial Day activities are planned across Delaware County on Monday, May 29.
The Village of Ashley has scheduled its annual Memorial Day Parade beginning at 9 a.m. at the corner of East High and South Main streets traveling east and then turning left on Ashley Road to the Ashley Union Cemetery.
The American Legion Color guard will lead the parade which includes members of the Ashley Boy Scout Troop, Buckeye Valley marching band and community groups.
Chris Acker is the keynote speaker.
City of Delaware will present a memorial service at 10 a.m. near the Veterans West area in Oak Grove Cemetery, South Sandusky Street.
The service will pay tribute to those that died in the line of duty in service to their country. Attendees may gather at the entrance of the cemetery at 9:30 a.m. to take part in a procession to the Veterans West area or they may go directly to the area.
The main road from the entrance to the west end will be lined with American flags.
The Delaware Air Force Junior ROTC will present the colors and hold a folding of the American Flag demonstration while reading the explanation of the folds.
Judge Henry Shaw will present the Gettysburg Address and Delaware County Commissioner Jeff Benton will provide the keynote address.
The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1095 Honor Guard will perform a rifle volley followed by taps.
• The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1095 will present a second memorial service at noon. The service will take place at Fairview Memorial Park Cemetery, Delaware.
Harold B. Wolford, president, will make a presentation and Shaw will read the Gettysburg Address.
Dwight Cimino, chaplain, will provide the keynote address and the Honor Guard will perform a rifle volley followed by taps.
The Village of Galena invites all to attend its Memorial Day Ceremonies.
Events begin at 1 p.m. on the Village Square with Galena Council member David Simmons offering opening remarks and Village Mayor Thomas Hopper presenting a memorial wreath at the G & T Club World War II Memorial.
The featured speaker will be Emma Armbrust, a local home-schooled high school senior, who attended Buckeye Girls State last year.
After presentations on the square the participants will proceed to the Galena Cemetery where Simmons will give a historical presentation about World War I veterans in the cemetery.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars will provide the honor guard for the event and will offer a three-volley salute and taps.
In case of inclement weather, the event will move to the Galena Village Hall at 109 Harrison St.
City of Powell is hosting the annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony at 10 a.m. in the downtown area.
The parade will feature about 60 units beginning on Grace Drive heading west to North Liberty Street. The parade will then travel south on Liberty Street to turning right onto Olentangy Street continuing west and ending at the railroad crossing.
At the Greater Powell Veterans Memorial in Village Green Park, located at 47 Hall Street, a ceremony will be held to honor those who gave their life in the service of their country.
The program includes remarks from Mayor Brian Lorenz and Lt. Col. Russ Anible, Air Force, retired, and the Senior Instructor of Delaware County Air Force ROTC, and the placement of bricks in honor of veterans and a flag retirement ceremony led by Boy Scout Troop 428.
The Olentangy Rotary Club is hosting the Field of Flags throughout the weekend where about 100 flags will be placed in Village Green Park to honor fallen heroes.
Radnor Township will honor the men and women of the armed forces with a parade and activities.
“It’s like our second Christmas,” said Joseph Thrush, community resident.
The day’s celebration begins at 8 a.m. at the Congregational Church for breakfast.
The parade begins at 10 a.m. at the Baptist Church on Route 203 traveling the back streets of Radnor to the cemetery where the day’s ceremony will take place to honor the township’s fallen soldiers. Retired Air Force Colonel Ken Fryman will give the keynote address and the Buckeye Valley Alumni Band will be the featured musicians.
Throughout the day baseball games are scheduled at the ballpark, an antique tractor and car show along with the fire department providing a pig roast at the Radnor Community Building.
The Welsh Heritage Museum will also be open for the day.
The Village of Sunbury Memorial Day Flea Market will be held from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the village square offering crafts, antiques, plants and food. Admission to the flea market is $1 for 11 years of age and older.
The village’s Memorial Day parade starts at 10 a.m.
