Two incoming seniors at Olentangy Liberty High School were killed in a car crash Monday morning.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reports that at approximately 11:12 a.m. a two-vehicle crash occurred on Africa Road south of Plumb Road in Berlin Township when a northbound 2003 Toyota Camry driven by Gavin D. Schlotterbeck, 17, of Powell went off the right side of the road, overcorrected and went left of center where it was struck on the passenger side by a 2015 Jeep Wrangler driven by Emily R. Bensi, 19, of Westerville.

Schlotterbeck and his passenger, Hunter D. McClelland, 17, of Powell, were pronounced dead at the scene, troopers reported Monday afternoon. Bensi and her passenger, Geneva Day, 12, of Columbus, were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Troopers report alcohol is not suspected in the crash and safety belts were used by all occupants when the crash occurred.

Troopers report the crash remains under investigation at this time.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the passing of two of our Liberty High School students this morning,” Olentangy Superintendent Mark Raiff said. “In the coming days we will do everything possible to support our students and families.”

The Ohio State Highway Patrol reports it was assisted at the scene by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, the Berlin Township Fire Department, the Delaware County Highway Department and Delaware County EMS.

Africa Road was closed for several hours Monday afternoon.
