Glad You Asked: Happy Wonderful Weirdos Day … and California statehood

0

Every so often I like to take a look through a reference resource we have on hand here at the library called Chase’s Calendar of Events. It’s a book that is updated annually to help us commemorate some of the lesser known holidays throughout the year.

Without reading this column today, you might have never known that today we celebrate Wonderful Weirdos Day. All of us are blessed with one or two wonderful weirdos in our lives. These are the folks who remind us to think outside the box, to be a little more true to ourselves. Today’s the day to thank them.

On this day in 1850, California became the 31st state in our nation. Call a friend in California and tell them to celebrate 167 years of statehood.

You might have cooked some yummy recipes by Mario Batali, or at least watched him on ABC’s “The Chew.” Today he celebrates his 57th birthday. SNL alum and funny man Adam Sandler creeps into his early 50s as he also celebrates his birthday today.

On September 26, while Serena Williams and Olivia Newton-John are out having fun for their birthdays, we’ll be celebrating National Voter Registration Day at the Delaware County District Library. We want to help ensure that every American is registered to vote for Election Day on November 7.

That day, and every day at the library, we will take particular care to help you register to vote if you haven’t already. As a library, we will print a voter registration form for you and mail it to the Delaware County Board of Elections on your behalf. We’ll also help you find your polling location, in case it might have moved since the last time you voted.

For more information, visit the Board of Elections website at www.delawareboe.org or stop in to your local library branch in Powell, Ostrander, Orange Township or downtown Delaware. We’ll be happy to help.

In the meantime, here are some new horror recommendations to bring you into the fall season.

“Abigale Hall” by Lauren A. Forry. After becoming orphans, Eliza and her sister Rebecca are sent to work for the mysterious Mr. Brownwell at Abigale Hall, but a mysterious housekeeper, Mrs. Pollard, tries to hide disturbing facts about the house and Eliza fears for the safety of herself and her sister.

“The White Road” by Sarah Lotz. Desperate to attract subscribers to his fledgling website, ex-adrenaline junkie Simon Newman undertakes two life-risking ventures, one in the notorious Cwm Pot caves and another scaling Everest, that force him to test the limits of his morality and wits in order to survive.

“Black Mad Wheel” by Josh Malerman. A Detroit band desperate to reclaim fame is recruited by the government to track down the source of a mysterious sound in the African desert, which they link to an ominous conspiracy and an enigmatic accident victim’s remarkable recovery.

“The Only Child” by Andrew Pyper. Forensic psychiatrist Lily Dominick finds her career and her sanity threatened when she encounters a client who claims to be two hundred years old and the inspiration behind three of the nineteenth century’s gothic literary classics.
