Fish sale, milkweed collection highlight SWCD events

September is always a busy month for conservation and the Delaware Soil & Water Conservation District. Two big events are underway — our annual fish sale and the second annual milkweed pod collection.

Orders for the 2017 Fish Sale will be accepted through Friday, Sept. 29. Available this year are largemouth bass, bluegill, hybrid bluegill, channel catfish, shell crackers, yellow perch, fathead minnows, and white amurs.

Detailed information about each species and suggestions for stocking rates can be found in an excellent publication from the Ohio Division of Wildlife, the Ohio Pond Management Handbook. A link to this is available on our website at www.delawareswcd.org by clicking on the publications tab.

The fish sale order form is also on our website or you may contact us at 740-368-1921 and we will mail you a copy. Fish pick up will be Thursday, Oct. 5 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Last year was our first participation in the Ohio Pollinator Habitat Initiative’s common milkweed pod collection, and the response from Delaware County residents was fantastic. People came with in bags overflowing with pods!

Milkweed is the only host plant for the monarch butterfly for egg laying and caterpillar rearing, and is also important for other pollinator species. Delaware SWCD will accept your brown (not green) milkweed pods now through Oct. 30. If you are new to milkweed pod collection or want to get more in-depth knowledge about milkweeds and monarchs, check out our website along with www.ophi.info.

The Ohio Division of Wildlife has colorful identification guides on bees and wasps, butterflies and skippers, and moths commonly found in Ohio that you can download off its website at wildlife.ohiodnr.gov/stay-informed/publications.
