Gallery ready for holiday run

After a five-year hiatus, Sunbury artist Carolyn Heffelfinger is bringing a pop-up art gallery back to downtown Delaware for the holiday season.

WORK of ART, which will feature over 70 of Heffelfinger’s paintings, will occupy 26 N. Sandusky St. for the next two months.

Several years back, Heffelfinger decided to open Wingspread Gallery, a limited time holiday gallery at 29 N. Sandusky St. Her idea to bring fine art to downtown Delaware was a success.

“It was a very nice experience having my paintings along with the work of artist friends shown together,” Heffelfinger said. “We were pleased at how well-received Wingspread Gallery was back then, having received a very positive response.”

Having briefly witnessed the appreciation downtown patrons seem to have for fine art, Heffelfinger and her husband had been discussing the idea of opening another temporary gallery when opportunity struck.

“When the space at 26 N. Sandusky St. became available, we jumped on it,” she said. “We love Delaware. We see it as such a vibrant, fun, and alive small city, and we believe it to be a good place for displaying my artwork where locals meet and utilize the downtown.”

WORK of ART will exclusively feature Heffelfinger’s paintings and fine jewelry by made by Shirley Turrell-Nevada.

Heffelfinger, who holds a degree in fine art from Kent State University and has been painting professionally for 25 years, said when people visit her gallery, they will quickly notice her love of the outdoors, as the majority of her oil paintings are nature-inspired.

“I most often use photos taken during my travels, backpacking, or in the Delaware County countryside,” she said.

When she isn’t working in her studio, Heffelfinger can be found working outdoors as a plein air painter, which simply means painting in open air.

Over the past two-plus decades, Heffelfinger’s work has been exhibited in various art museums throughout the state: Springfield Museum of Art, Butler Museum of American Art, Zanesville Institute of Art, and The Best of The Ohio Plein Air Society Show at the Columbus Art Museum.

WORK of ART will have a soft opening from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1 with an opening reception planned for the First Friday event on Nov. 3. Doors will open at 5 p.m.

Normal gallery hours through Dec. 23 will be 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.
