Clyde, Space to rally with Delaware County Democrats

State Rep. Kathleen Clyde and former U.S. Rep Zack Space will be the featured speakers at the Delaware County Democratic Party’s Kick Off To Victory Fundraiser.

Clyde is the likely Democratic Party candidate for Ohio Secretary of State in 2018 and Space is expected to be the party’s candidate for Ohio Auditor, according to political observers.

The tailgate-style event is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 16 at the Lakes Country Club, 6740 Worthington Road, Westerville.

Clyde, 38, a native of Garrettsville, said she will be an advocate for voters and voting rights as Ohio’s Secretary of State and to secure and modernize Ohio elections. As a state representative from Kent since 2011, she has sought to restore the busiest days of early voting and extend early voting days and hours. She introduced legislation for automatic voting registration that will ensure Ohioans are added to the rolls when they get a driver’s license, seek disability services, or reach age 18.

Clyde has been an advocate for Ohio’s working families and women. She organized opposition to Senate Bill 5 and represented steelworkers and low wage AFSCME workers in her district. She has secured changes to the law and resources to help small businesses and economic development in her district. She is the lead sponsor of the Ohio’s Equal Pay Act. In 2013, she held hearings across the state regarding limits on abortion that were included in Ohio’s budget bills.

Before her time in the Statehouse, she worked in the Ohio Senate and as Deputy Legal Counsel to the Speaker of the Ohio House. She also served as an election official directing the Franklin County Early Vote Center during the 2008 presidential election.

Space, 56, is a native of Dover. In 2006, he was elected to Congress from Ohio’s 18th District, comprising much of rural eastern and southern Ohio. During his tenure in Congress, Space was instrumental in bringing broadband technology, employment opportunities, and infrastructure improvements to his constituents.

After leaving Congress in 2011, Space joined the Columbus law firm Vorys Advisors, where he has worked with local governments, charitable organizations, and the private sector to promote economic development. He serves as a board member for numerous nonprofit organizations, including the Rural Community Assistance Partnership, CoalBlue, the Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations, the Ohio Black Legislative Caucus Foundation, and the Steering Committee for the Central Ohio Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. He also serves as a board member on the Tuscarawas County Board of Elections.

If elected Ohio Auditor, Space said he pledges to deliver reform to state government by reducing the influence that campaign contributions have on policy, taking politics out of the redistricting process, and serving as a government watchdog.

The fundraiser will feature food, drinks, music, and a silent auction. Tickets cost $50 and sponsorships of $100, $250 and $500 may be purchased from the Delaware County Democratic Party at www.ohiodeladems.org and from party treasurer John Schmarr, 6299 Lake Trail Drive, Westerville.
