Glad You Asked: Some tasty holiday cooking ideas

0

Here we are on the cusp of another holiday season. Families and friends are making plans to gather in the coming weeks. Regardless of how you celebrate, the common thread that runs through most get-togethers is food. The Delaware County District Library offers cookbook clubs at three of our locations for the casual chef who wants to expand their repertoire.

The cookbook clubs at Delaware Main and Orange Branch libraries cook recipes from a monthly book selection, and our Ostrander Branch meets every other month. After testing out some recipes from the book, members bring a dish from that month’s book to share with group and then engage in conversation about their culinary adventure.

While a few groups are skipping November meetings due to Thanksgiving, the Delaware Main Library’s Kids Cookbook Club is hosting their annual Thanksgiving feast by having kids (and their parents, of course) create their favorite Thanksgiving side dish to share with the group.

In December, things are taking a sweet turn for the adult cookbook clubs. The Ostrander club is making cookies on December 12 from “Debbie Macomber’s Christmas Cookbook.” Orange Branch Library is taking on “The Sweet Art of Candy Making” by Elizabeth LaBau on December 13. Finally, Delaware Main Library is cooking from “Good Housekeeping Christmas Cookies” on December 14.

When you’re in to pick up the next month’s cookbook club selection, you might try any of these other new cookbook additions to our catalog.

“Adventures in Slow Cooking” by Sarah DiGregorio. The food writer revamps the slow cooker for the modern home cook, providing ingenious ideas and more than 100 delicious recipes for maximizing this favorite time-saving kitchen appliance and making it easier than ever to use.

“Cooking at Home with Bridget & Julia” by Bridget Lancaster and Julia Collin Davison. Bridget and Julia have hand selected 150 of their all-time favorite America’s Test Kitchen recipes (and the variations that they make for their families) for this one-of-a-kind book.

“Vegan Holiday Kitchen” by Nava Atlas. Atlas, one of the most respected names in vegetarian and vegan cooking, brilliantly fills the biggest gap in the vegan repertoire by addressing everything from Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, and Christmas to celebratory brunches, lunches, dinners, potlucks, and buffets.

“Cherry Bombe: The Cookbook” by Kerry Diamon and Claudia Wu. It’s the first-ever cookbook from the team behind “Cherry Bombe,” the hit indie magazine about women and food, and the “Radio Cherry Bombe” podcast. Inside are 100+ recipes from some of the most interesting chefs, bakers, food stylists, pastry chefs, and creatives on the food scene today.

“The Sweet Spot” by Bill Yosses and Peter Kaminsky. “Treat sugar like salt.” This is the mantra of Bill Yosses, a former White House pastry chef, and his secret to baking indulgent yet wholesome desserts that truly satisfy. After being tasked by First Lady Michelle Obama to create healthier treats for her family, he discovered that when he dialed back the sugar in his recipes, his desserts were not only healthier on paper, but they actually tasted better too.
