The Olentangy Local School District has issued a draft of its 2017-18 school year calendar, and is seeking public comment.

“We try to start the third Wednesday of August and end before Memorial Day,” said Randy Wright, chief of administrative services, at the Olentangy Board of Education meeting on Thursday.

The first day of the school year would be Aug. 16, 2017. The first quarter would end Oct. 20, and the first semester would end Dec. 21. There would be a Thanksgiving break on Nov. 23-25; and winter break would be from Dec. 22, 2017, to Jan. 2, 2018.

Classes would resume on Jan. 3, with the third quarter ending March 16. Spring break would be March 26-30; with the last day of school on May 22. Commencement was not on the calendar, but the last Sunday in May is on the 27th, and Memorial Day is May 28.

The school year would be 176 days. There are 45 days in the first quarter and 40 days in the second quarter, for an 85-day first semester. The second semester would be 91 days, with 50 days in the third quarter and 39 days in the fourth quarter.

The calendar has days with no school on three professional development days (Sept. 18, Nov. 27 and Feb. 16); two conference exchange days (Nov. 22 and April 27) and on Central Ohio Teachers Association Day (Oct. 13). There would also be days off for the holidays of Labor Day (Sept. 4); Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 15); and Presidents Day (Feb. 19).

The survey is available from the district’s website, http://www.olentangy.k12.oh.us/Olentangy

The survey will close on March 12, with feedback reviewed before finalizing the calendar. The school board will vote on a final draft of the calendar in April.
