Liberty hit the ball pretty well, banging out nine hits, and Mitchell Griffiths limited visiting Chillicothe to just one run in his five innings of work as the Patriots went on to notch a 6-2 Division I sectional final win Friday in Powell.

After a scoreless first, Liberty (22-5) broke things open in the second. With Marcus Wechselberger at second and two runs already in, Cameron Comer singled up the middle to drive in Wechselberger with the game’s third tally.

Griffiths got into a bit of trouble in the third as the Cavaliers sandwiched a single between a pair of walks — one of which came around to score their first run — but recovered well to get out of the inning without any further damage. With two on and just one out, Griffiths eluded trouble with a strikeout and pickoff to end the threat.

The Patriots got the run back in the fourth. Nick Parr started the inning with a solid single to the outfield and Nate Meeker, who came on to pinch run for Parr, stole second and got to third on a wild pitch to set the table. He then scored when Griffiths bounced into a fielder’s choice, making it a 4-1 game.

Liberty added two more insurance runs in the fifth before the visitors scored their second and final run of the game in the top of the seventh.

Parr and Wechselberger led the way, Parr with a team-best three hits and Wechselberger with a game-high two RBIs.

Griffiths, who notched the win on the mound, struck out three.
