An arrest was made yesterday in the robbery of an 80-year-old woman whose purse was stolen in the garage of her Lewis Center home.
The Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Team (SOFAT) apprehended 42-year-old Emmie Jo Lowery on the 1400 block of Manchester Ave. in Columbus yesterday afternoon. She was wanted by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office for robbery.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the suspect followed the elderly woman and her husband home the evening of August 2 after they had run some errands.
“The suspect entered the couple’s garage, strong-armed the elderly woman, and took her purse along with all of its contents,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “Fortunately the victim was not seriously injured.”
Within an hour, the victim’s credit card was used several times in Columbus by a female, who was caught on camera. DCSO detectives named Lowery as a suspect and a warrant was issued.
“This crime constitutes a vicious attack on one of our community’s most vulnerable citizens,” said Peter C. Tobin, U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of Ohio, in a statement. “It was a deplorable act, and I’m very pleased the Marshals Service could work with our local law enforcement partners to quickly arrest the perpetrator.”
The suspect has a lengthy criminal record, including assaulting a nun while attempting to steal a purse at a Columbus Catholic School in 2007.
