School may be out for the summer, but a collection drive next week will help some students in the county stock up on supplies they will need for the fall.

Walmart and the United Way of Delaware County’s Women’s Leadership Network are teaming up to “Stuff the Bus” with school supplies and personal hygiene items from June 16 to June 21. Walmart and United Way are also staging similar events nationwide.

“We’re doing the week-long Stuff the Bus at the Walmart in Lewis Center (8659 Columbus Pike), but we also have other collection points,” United Way of Delaware County vice president Barb Lyon told The Gazette.

Event organizers said folks can also drop off the donated items in bins at: Buehler’s in Delaware; Council for Older Adults; Delaware Chamber of Commerce; Delaware City Schools Administrative Office, Delaware YMCA; United Way of Delaware County; Woodward Summer Lunch Program.

“People can buy supplies wherever, and drop them off at any of those collection points,” Lyon said.

Among the supplies that are needed: crayons; colored pencils; composition notebooks; dry erase markers; glue sticks; highlighters; large erasers; markers; new backpacks; pens; pocket folders; regular pencils; ruled notebook paper; rulers; scissors; spiral notebooks; three-ring binders; and white glue. In addition, deodorant, hair brushes, soap, shampoo, socks, underwear, toothbrushes and toothpaste are also needed.

“We will sort and distribute those supplies at an event called Supplies for Scholars,” Lyon said. “It’s unique that we’re doing two events to get kids ready for school.”

Supplies for Scholars takes place from 1 to 4 p.m. July 18 at Woodward Elementary, 200 S. Washington St. Lyon said it is free and open to any child in Delaware County, preschool through high school. In addition to the items being donated, there will be haircuts from Great Clips and shoe gift cards available. The family-friendly Supplies for Scholars includes kids’ activities and refreshments.

The events were the brainchild of United Way staff and Women’s Leadership Network volunteers, Lyon said.

“They recognized that if a family was in need of getting their child ready to go back to school, they had to go to multiple agencies. Our goal was to be able to have everybody able to come to one location. We do recognize getting kids ready to go back to school can be a burden for families financially to buy all the supplies, shoes and the clothes. So we’re helping to alleviate some of that burden and make it a positive experience for kids.”
