The three-headed monster of Kyle Milliron, Patrick Grubb and Riley Bruening combined for 13 goals and six assists to lead the Olentangy boys lacrosse team to a convincing 18-2 victory at Thomas Worthington Friday night in Worthington.
“Our goal was to put together a full game,” Milliron said. “We always play against perfection. We’re not playing against other guys – we’re just playing against ourselves. I think we did that tonight.”
Grubb scored five goals to go with a pair of assists, Milliron had four goals and four assists and Bruening added four goals to pace Olentangy (2-1).
“It might be (Milliron) one night, it might be Riley Bruening and, obviously, Pat Grubb can turn it on at any point. It’s nice to have those three attackmen … and they share the ball so well,” Olentangy coach Zach Peterson said. “They’re versatile and they’re fun to work with.”
Bruening, Shane Hershiser, Grubb and Cam Kennedy peppered the Thomas goal with four goals in a span of 1 minute, 53 seconds to blow the game open, extending the Olentangy lead to 7-1 with 6:03 left in the second quarter.
Sam Monastra, Bruening and Grubb scored goals to give Olentangy a 3-0 edge at the end of the first period.
Max Nordquist and Taylor Weinsz scored goals for the Cardinals in the second period, bookending a stretch of five straight goals by Olentangy, which led 8-2 at the break.
Milliron scored three of his goals in the third period and Bruening scored two as Olentangy posted seven goals in the third frame to lead 15-2.
Milliron, Patrick Henry and Grubb capped the scoring in the fourth.
Henry and Hershiser each finished with a goal and an assist and Cole Gordon tallied a goal as well. Charles Harkin stopped six shots in goal for Olentangy.
“We lost one last week to Jerome where we led for most of the game,” Peterson said. “So, this was a good one to get under our belt just to build some confidence and let them know that they are an elite program in the state.”
Isaac Short stopped five shots and Owen Kehl made three saves for Thomas (0-5) in the second half.
Olentangy is right back at it today, hosting Cincinnati Sycamore at 3 p.m.
Big Walnut 14, Johnstown 1
The Golden Eagles were sharp in their season opener, coupling a balanced offensive attack with solid defense en route to a lopsided win Friday in Johnstown.
Nathan Montgomery and Judah Lozano finished with three goals apiece while Seth Daniels, Joe Blubaugh, Nate McVeigh and Campbell Allen added two goals each. Allen also chipped in a team-best five assists.
Josh Hageman finished with eight saves in the Golden Eagle goal while Bryan Mengel stopped a pair of shots in relief.
Orange 14, Sylvania Northview 4
The Pioneers scored the first nine goals of the game, and didn’t give one up until midway through the second on the way to a dominant non-league win Friday in Lewis Center.
Nick Brandt had four goals during the early run, including a first quarter hat trick, while Josh Rochon, Luke Schmeling, Jack Applegate, Mason Handa and Gardiner scored during the surge.
FROM THURSDAY
Andrew Lyon and Ethan Miller scored two goals apiece, but Hayes never could get much going on the offensive end during Thursday’s 10-4 loss to visiting Watterson.
Tyler Groth finished with seven saves in the Delaware goal.

Nathan Heiser poured in a game-high five goals and Trent Slavik added four as Buckeye Valley doubled up Johnstown 12-6.
Carson James added a pair of goals and Zach Garber had one to smooth out the scoring summary.
Nick Gerold finished with eight saves in the BV goal.
