LIMA — The 2.7-liter, V6 EcoBoost engine is built on a compacted graphite iron engine block. It is designed to deliver power and torque consistent with larger engines, even naturally aspirated or traditional engines, while also providing approximately 20 percent better fuel economy and 15 percent reduced greenhouse emissions.
The composite of compacted graphite iron and aluminum saves weight while also providing strength. Therefore, it provides better fuel economy without a general loss in power.
The Ford EcoBoost engine uses turbocharged technology, which forces in more air than a normal engine would receive. With more air and more fuel in a cylinder, the engines becomes more powerful than a traditional engine. Turbocharging can be described as giving the vehicle a boost and thus spawned the name used by Ford.
The Ford EcoBoost engine also relies on gasoline direct injection. Direct injection sends fuel into the engine, which also improves efficiency.
The engine also is designed to use standard Auto Start-Stop technology to boost fuel economy. Auto Start-Stop turns the engine off automatically while when the driver steps on the brake — like at a traffic light — and restarts once the driver releases the brake, except when towing or in four-wheel drive mode.
