Bernard B. Hurst Jr.

Bernard B. Hurst Jr., 78, of Delaware, died Thursday (March 5, 2009) in the emergency room of Grady Memorial Hospital.

He was born Dec. 11, 1930 in Duhring, W.Va. to Bernard and Ethel (Delp) Hurst. He served his country during the Korean War in the U.S. Air Force. He graduated in 1956 from Virginia Tech with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. In 1971, he was appointed district deputy director over District 6 in the Ohio Department of Transportation. In 1987, he was appointed director of ODOT. From 1991–1999, he was employed by R.D. Zande Consulting Engineering Firm and retired in 2000. In April 2007, he began working part-time for E.P. Ferris and Associated as a senior marketing engineer. He served on the board of directors of the International Road Federation. He was a member of the William Street United Methodist Church since 1957, former member of the Delaware Elks Club, he was a member and past master of Hiram Masonic Lodge, Chapter, Council, O.E.S., Scottish Rite and Aladdin Temple Shrine. In 1989, he was inducted into The Ohio State Fair Hall of Fame, when director of ODOT, for the beautification of Interstate 71 interchanges adjacent to the fairgrounds.

Bernard is survived by his wife, Beverley, whom he married July 22, 1955; one daughter and son-in-law, Janet “Lynn” Hurst and Tom Goodnight of Columbia Station; one son and daughter-in-law, Jon and Jan Hurst of Beverly, Mass.; six grandchildren, Ian, Craig, Katie, Jonathan, Alex and Christian; and five brothers and sisters, Sybil, Ruby, Donnalee, Carl and David.

Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Robinson Funeral Home, 32 W. Winter St., with a Masonic Service at 4 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at William Street United Methodist Church, 28 W. William St., with the Rev. Julie Carmean officiating.
