Elwood ‘Smitty’ Smith

Elwood “Smitty” Smith, 70, of Delaware died peacefully, Monday Oct. 19, 2009 at home surrounded by his family.

He was born on Feb. 3, 1939 in Elliot County, Kentucky. A graduate of Big Walnut High School in 1956, he had been a Delaware resident since 1960. Elwood worked as a construction superintendent for XL Corporation, Cody Ziegler and recently retired from C & N Construction.

Genuine, he was happiest caring for the needs of others. He loved to work and tinker on just about anything. Hard but fare, he was always eager to learn and teach other his trade. From the old school, he earned your respect.

He was the precious husband of Roberta “Bert” (Milliron), father of Monte (Candy) Smith of Ashley, Jeff (Patty) Smith of Radnor, Tina Marie (Tony) Scott of Aurora, CO, Jason (Jessica) Smith of Delaware, Jodi Herring (Mike Vermaaten) of Delaware, Jeni Smith of Delaware, and was the proud grandfather of 22 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren all of whom earned a special place in his heart. His mother: Myrtle (Whitt) Smith, brother JR Smith, and sister Pauline Schoenberger also survive in Sunbury.

Preceded in death by his father Richard and sister Mavis Welch.

Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Ohio 3 at Ohio 61, Sunbury, where services will be held 1 p.m. Friday with JR Smith and Rev. Andy Freeman officiating. Burial will follow in Berkshire Cemetery.
