Jean K. Smock, age 91, of Delaware, died Thursday (Oct. 22, 2009) at the Sarah Moore Home.

She was born Dec. 26, 1917 in Rouseville, Pa. to Charles and Lois (Herrington) Kilgore. Her mother died when she was one year of age and she was reared by her father and stepmother, Mary Jane (Lee) Kilgore. She graduated from East High School in Erie, Pa. and Edinboro Teachers College. She began her career as a school teacher in Pennsylvania, and after coming to Delaware, she worked at Gray’s Shoes and then Ohio Wesleyan University for fifteen years. Jean was a member of the Delaware First Presbyterian Church, where she had served as an elder, trustee and was a member of the Willa Hutchisson Circle. She was a member of the Sarah Moore Home Board, Women’s City Club, Lions Club and Cosmopolitan Club. She had a special interest in the outdoors, birds and playing bridge. She cared deeply for her family and friends.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law Eric and Terry of Delaware; a daughter-in-law, Ann Smock, of Toledo; four granddaughters, Jennifer (Randall) Downey, Stacie (Ben) Russell, Leighanna Jagelka and Molly Jagelka; two great grandchildren, Elizabeth Radcliff and Logan Russell; a sister, Martha (Roy) Barthel of N.C.; two brothers, Charles H. (Marjorie) Kilgore of San Antonio, Texas, and Robert J. (Betty) Kilgore of Pauley’s Island, N.C.

She was preceded in death by a son, James, in 2007 and her husband Donald in 2008.

Burial will be in Marlborough Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Deborah Patterson officiating. A reception will follow at the church. Robinson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
