Maxine Buckingham

Maxine Buckingham, 86, died Friday (Oct. 23, 2009), at home in Sunbury.

She was born Aug. 9, 1923 in Sunbury to the late Henry L. and Essie (McCoy) Roof. A graduate of Sunbury High School in 1941, she worked as a typist for the former Nestle’s plant in Sunbury.

A faithful member of Sunbury United Methodist Church, Methodist Women, and Ruth’s Circle, she was past matron and a 50-plus year member of Columbia Chapter No. 33 OES. A founding member of the Big Walnut Historical Society, she was also a member of the Progress and Garden Clubs in Sunbury.

Hardworking and industrious, she always put the needs of others before her own. She enjoyed the arts and was an excellent cook, baker, and seamstress.

She is survived by two sons, Kevin who cared for her in Sunbury, and Gary (Els) of Austin, Texas; grandchildren Tony, Nick and Sarah; great-grandchildren Jonathan and William; brother Dale (Norma) Roof of Sunbury; nieces and nephews, including Sharon Jones and Larry Roof of Sunbury.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Joseph, in 1996, daughter-in-law Madelyn, and brothers Howard and Don Roof.

Friends may call one hour prior to the 11 a.m. Wednesday funeral services at Sunbury United Methodist Church, 100 W. Cherry St., Sunbury. The Rev. Brian Smith will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunbury Memorial Park. Arrangements are entrusted to DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, Sunbury.
