Letter about Bush ‘misleading to readers’

To the editor:

A letter from Phil Kabealo that you published (“Bushes have slapped the face of severely wounded veterans,” July 13) was misleading to the readers.

Mr. Kabealo would have been wise to check the facts before submitting his letter for publication. The “Helping A Hero” fundraiser at which President Bush spoke took place in 2012. This gala raised $2.45 million after expenses. President Bush’s usual speaking fee is $250,000 but, for this event, he was paid $100,000.

The charity announced that they were proud that President Bush helped them raise “unprecedented funds.”

The following year — without President Bush — the gala raised $1 million. It is clear that the presence of President Bush made a difference in the funds raised.
