OWU men’s soccer cruises in opener

Staff Report

Senior forward Brian Schaefer (Chatham, N.J.) scored a pair of goals less than two minutes apart to start fifth-ranked Ohio Wesleyan on its way to a 7-0 non-conference win over Earlham on Tuesday at the Jay Martin Soccer Complex.

Schaefer put the Bishops on the scoreboard in the 17th minute with an unassisted goal, then tallied another unassisted goal just 1:57 later for a 2-0 Ohio Wesleyan lead.

The first half ended with Ohio Wesleyan holding that 2-0 lead.

The Bishops struck quickly to open the second half, with junior forward Kyle Baum (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) finding senior midfielder Lonnie Barnes (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) for a goal less than two minutes into the period, and Schaefer connecting with senior back Evan Lee (Toledo/St. John’s) for a goal that made it a 4-0 game in the 52nd minute.

Freshman midfielder Jack Shadoan (Dublin/Scioto) added a goal courtesy of a feed from senior midfielder Ricardo Balmaceda (Houston, Texas/The Village School) in the 85th minute, and freshman forward Lucas Farmer (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run) scored an unassisted goal in the 88th minute. Just over a minute later, Farmer set up the Bishops’ final goal when his shot was saved by Quaker keeper Diego Perea, but an Earlham defender knocked the ball into the goal.

The Bishop defense, which allowed just one shot during the first half, ended up yielding but six shots on the evening.

“Obviously, that was a good start,” said Bishop head coach Jay Martin. “Frankly, we did better than I thought we were going to do. We have more depth than I thought we had a week ago. (Will) Sharer, (Luke) Gabbert, (Jack) Shadoan, and (Lucas) Farmer were real strong, and I think all of them will help us this year. Brian (Schaefer) was good, Lonnie (Barnes) was good, and Phoenix (Neitzelt) was good, and Evan (Lee) played great.”

Ohio Wesleyan outshot Earlham, 23-6. Junior Ben Farynowski (Grandview Heights) had three saves. Perea finished with five saves in the Earlham goal.
