The Delaware Hayes baseball team scored all the runs it would need in the first inning, plating three on the way to a solid 8-2 season-opening win over host West Jefferson Saturday afternoon.

Tyler Brown sparked the offense with a pair of hits, including a double, and four RBI. Zach Price was also solid, knocking in a pair, while Gabe Phillips and Ben Yoakum had two hits apiece.

Brown was solid on the mound, too, picking up the complete-game win. He scattered seven hits in his seven innings of work while striking out two, walking a pair and allowing just the two earned runs.

The Pacers (1-0) return to action Tuesday against host Franklin Heights.

St. Charles 6, Liberty 0; Liberty 3, Westchester Country Day 2 (NC); Liberty 6, Canon Mac 4

Both teams finished with six hits, but the Patriots couldn’t turn any of theirs into runs as the Cardinals won Sunday’s non-league showdown.

Corbin Parrish, Ryan Hoffman, Brennan Rowe, Mitch Milheim, Beau Foster and Kyle O’Mery had the Liberty (2-1) hits while Preston Stanley suffered the setback on the mound. He allowed six runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out three and walking one in his five innings of action.

Carson Comer had a pair of hits and an RBI, and Rowe and Connor Stewart knocked in runs to lead the Patriots past Westchester County Day in Sunday’s first game.

Hunter Voorhees was good on the mound, too, tossing six scoreless innings while striking out four and allowing just five hits to collect the win.

Comer did most of the damage in Saturday’s season-opening win over Canon Mac, finishing with three RBI.

Highland 4, Buckeye Valley 1; Lexington 2, Buckeye Valley 0

The top three guys in the order scratched out hits, but knocks from Landon Alexander, Evan Ulrich and Ben Spaulding were all the Barons could muster in Saturday’s showdown against Highland in Lexington.

BV (0-2) struggled at the plate in the first game of the doubleheader, too, finishing with two hits in a 2-0 loss to host Lexington.

Spaudling pitched well despite suffering the setback, allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out five over six innings.

Orange 11, Portsmouth 3; Orange 7, Greenup (Ky.) 3

The Pioneers opened the season with a pair of wins Saturday, cruising past Portsmouth before using a four-run sixth to knock off Greenup (Ky.).

Tyler Brown led Orange (2-0) with a pair of two-run homers against Portsmouth. His first came in the third and his second in the sixth inning.

Matthew Poole, meanwhile, was solid in relief to pick up the win against Greenup.

SOFTBALL

Buckeye Valley split its season-opening doubleheader against visiting London Saturday.

The Barons (1-1) used a five-run first to set the tone in the opener, with Rylee George’s grand slam providing the bulk of the damage.

Cora Hollingsworth also had a homer in the inning while Paige Milhon added a game-high three hits in the 5-4 win.

Olivia Schick picked up the win in the circle, allowing four runs on four hits while striking out two in three innings of work. Nicole Peak pitched four scoreless, striking out six to preserve the victory.

London started the second game with five unanswered runs on the way to a 10-5 win to salvage the split.

BV returns to action Tuesday against host Delaware Christian.

Olentangy 6, Elk Lake (Pa.) 3; North Hills (Pa.) 3, Olentangy 2

The Braves started the season in style, scoring three first-inning runs on the way to a 6-3 win Saturday morning at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Florida.

Elk Lake battled back with two runs in the third and one in the fourth to even things up, but Olentangy plated three in the sixth to smooth out the scoring summary.

Morgan Cox and Kristen Bartel led the Braves with two hits apiece. Bartel and Sydney Wagner had a combined four RBI, two each, in the win while Sophie Low earned the win in the circle. Low allowed just two hits while striking out nine in five innings of work.

Sylvia Kelly hit a home run in the opener, but it wasn’t quite enough as North Hills scored in the bottom of the seventh to slip away with a win Saturday at Disney.

Kelly, Wagner and Low had two hits apiece in the setback.

Next up, the Braves (1-1) take on visiting West Jefferson in today’s home opener.
