Barons win MOAC championship in impressive fashion

Considering the stellar regular season the Buckeye Valley boys tennis team put together, Saturday’s MOAC championship wasn’t all that big of a surprise.

It was still impressive, though.

The Barons picked up first-place points on four of the five courts, finishing with 25 points. Jonathan Alder nabbed runner-up honors with 19 points while co-host River Valley smoothed out the top three with 15. Galion finished fourth with 11 points, Marion Harding – which joined River Valley in hosting the event – was fifth with seven and Pleasant finished sixth with three.

Nick Roden, who earned first-team All-MOAC recognition for his effort, took top honors at first singles. He outlasted River Valley’s Manny Acuna 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in the championship.

BV’s other champs included Ben Swanger at second singles, Nick Baesman at third singles and the duo of Kyle Baesman and Erik Naslund at second doubles.

Swanger beat a Viking opponent 6-2, 6-1 in his title match, Nick Baesman sailed past a Galion opponent 6-0, 6-0 in his championship and Kyle Baesman and Naslund beat a team from Jonathan Alder by a 6-3, 6-3 margin to earn bragging rights at second doubles.

In other action, Buckeye Valley’s Mitchell Garnett and Jake Kehoe finished fifth at first doubles.
