Godfrey off to solid start at Ohio Amateur Championship

Delaware graduate and University of Toledo sophomore Grant Godfrey got off to a stellar start in the 2017 Ohio Amateur Championship Tuesday at Springfield Country Club, firing an even-par 70 to finish the day just three strokes off the lead.

He hit 14 greens and 11 fairways on the way to a six-birdie round — an effort good enough for 15th place among the 144 players who competed in the opening round.

Godfrey, who will be looking to make up ground on Bellbrook’s Jeffrey Scohy, Dublin’s Camden Solomon, Centerville’s Austin Sipe and Cincinnati’s Brennen Walsh, who find themselves in a four-way tie for the top spot after firing 67s, tees off for second-round action today at 8 a.m.

Liberty senior Trey Rath was also in action, finishing with an opening-round 76 to close tied for 63rd in the early going. After starting with back-to-back bogies on the first two, Rath bounced back with 10 straight solid holes — a stretch including a birdie and nine pars.
