Hayes graduate and Toledo sophomore Grant Godfrey couldn’t quite catch Centerville’s Austin Sipe, but he did move up the leaderboard for the third straight day en route to a runner-up finish at the 2017 Ohio Amateur Championship Friday at Springfield Country Club.

Godfrey was 15th after an even par first round, moved all the way up to a tie for fifth after an even-par second, slipped into the top three thanks to a one-under-par third on Thursday and, with the 71 (+1) he shot Friday, moved into a second-place tie to close out the tourney.

Sipe led wire to wire, finishing with a four-round total of 276. Godfrey and Pickerington’s Alex Weiss were next with 280s while Cincinnati’s Brennen Walsh and Springfield’s Luke Wells smoothed out the top five with 281s.

Liberty senior Trey Rath just missed the top 20, closing tied for 25th. He fired rounds of 76, 75, 68 and 76 to account for his 295 total.

The top 20 are exempt for next year’s Ohio Amateur Championship to be played at Wedgewood Golf and Country Club in Powell.
