Pioneers, Patriots share conference crown

The Olentangy Orange and Olentangy Liberty volleyball teams, the only squads to beat each other in league play, officially earned shares of the conference crown with wins in their respective OCC finales Tuesday night.

The Pioneers knocked off visiting Westerville North in three sets to claim their share — their third straight title. They won the first 25-17 before sealing the deal with wins of 24-10 and 25-7.

Carrigan O’Reilly quarterbacked the offense with 25 assists while Taylor Metzler had nine kills.

Orange was aggressive from start to finish, something the team’s been able to do all season.

“I’ve been impressed with this team’s competitiveness and tenacity,” Pioneer coach Katie Duy said. “We’ve played an extremely tough schedule to challenge them, and they have stepped up and succeeded in the conference.”

Liberty had to battle a bit more for its share, but earned it just the same. The Patriots outlasted visiting Olentangy in five sets. They won the first 25-14, lost the second and third by respective scores of 20-25 and 21-25, but rallied to take the last two 25-20 and 15-9 to seal the deal.

“I’m extremely proud,” Liberty coach Jen Chapman said. “We hadn’t won a league title since 2010. We came out strong, Olentangy picked it up and played tough the next two — games 2-4 were battles — then we started game 5 well and finished strong.”

BOYS SOCCER

Delaware Hayes picked up a convincing non-league win Tuesday in Delaware, rolling past visiting Fairbanks 7-0.

Owen Boyer got the Pacers on the board less than 10 minutes in. Brody Kannally scored twice and Kyle Plump added another to lift their team to a 4-0 lead by the break.

Kannally completed his hat trick at the 23:46 mark of the second half and scored his fourth goal of the game less than 10 minutes later. Austin Pollox then smoothed out the scoring summary with 14:11 to play.
