In the spring of 1975, a handful of area parents formed the Delaware Youth Athletic Association (DYAA) with a handshake, followed by the playing of DYAA’s first soccer game for the benefit of the children and families of the Delaware community.

And as they say, “the rest is history.”

According to Art Miller, DYAA President for the past 30 years, the program’s pedigree stems from the growth of Delaware and the game itself.

“DYAA’s history is a direct reflection of the growth and development of both our wonderful community and the great sport of soccer,” he said. “And today, 40 years since our founding, DYAA serves approximately 1,300 kids who play soccer during both the spring and fall seasons and another 300 who participate in DYAA’s summer soccer camps.”

When asked what Miller would attribute DYAA’s success to, he credited the many volunteers who have given their time and talent over the years.

“In fact, it takes approximately 4,525 hours of volunteer service to plan, organize, coach and implement DYAA’s recreational and select soccer programs every spring and every fall season,” Miller said.

Miller also credits the 40-year partnership that DYAA has had with Delaware’s parks and recreation staff, and Delaware City administrators. Finally, Miller acknowledged Ohio Wesleyan head soccer coaches, Jay Martin and Bob Barnes. Dr. Martin and Mr. Barnes have donated their time, talent and resources to DYAA, as have many OWU players who have served as DYAA coaches and trainers throughout the past 40 years.

“Indeed, I’m privileged to have worked with so many individuals dedicated to kids, families and the Delaware community throughout my 30-plus year affiliation with DYAA,” he said. “Together, we’ve been able to respond to our rapid and consistent growth by providing and maintaining the fields and equipment needed to meet our community’s interest in all levels of soccer.”

In total, DYAA has served tens of thousands of families by offering both recreational and club/select programs for PK through high school grade levels.

Registration for the fall season is now underway, marking the 80th season of DYAA soccer for Delaware. For further information go to dyaasoccer.org.
