Professor to discuss Queen Boudica

According to Military History, Celtic Queen Boudica “slaughtered a Roman army (and) torched Londinium, leaving a charred layer almost half a meter thick that can still be traced under modern London.”

Caitlin Gillespie, Ph.D., assistant professor of Classics at Columbia University in New York City, will discuss Boudica’s leadership and legacy March 3 when she presents “Boudica: Dux Femina of Roman Britain.” Gillespie’s free presentation will begin at 4 p.m. in Room 330 of Slocum Hall, 75 S. Sandusky St., Delaware.

Gillespie is working on an Oxford University Press monograph about Boudica, who led the revolt against Roman rule in Britain during the reign of Emperor Nero. Gillespie also is the author of several scholarly articles on Euripides, Tacitus, and other classical authors and topics, including a forthcoming paper on the Roman poet Lucan in the Blackwell Companion to Latin Epic, 14-96 CE, which is being co-edited by Ohio Wesleyan Classics professor Lee Fratantuono, Ph.D.

Her lecture is sponsored by Ohio Wesleyan’s Classics Program. Learn more about the OWU program at www.owu.edu/classics.
